Lessons

I work with a method called "the Direct Method" which was devised in the 60's by the British Council to teach English to immigrants, people who need the language for work and to integrate.  This method works equally well with beginners, intermediate or advanced students.  It has proved so successful that it has been adopted by many countries including France, via the French Institute, and applied to their own language.  It basically stands at the antipodes of school learning: learners discover the target language like children do their mother tongue.  School can hinder one’s learning process by promoting competition and, amongst other things, destroying kids’ self-confidence in the process, and self-confidence, together with pleasure, is a condition to learning.  I will teach you not to rely on translation (which interferes with the wrong side of your brain) or your wanting explanations, but on intuition, and you will trust again in your abilities.  Remember that it is the context that provides the meaning.

It's tough, going back to learning; it takes courage, time and effort, but it is extremely fulfilling, enjoyable and fun when you realise that you too can learn and succeed in communicating with French people, learn about their habits and culture... and eventually, make jokes French people will laugh at.

The lessons are centered on oral practice although written support is essential.  I work with a very good and renowned course book called Vite et Bien (CLE International) which I will ask you to purchase (about 18€ - I can get it for you).  All other material is free. The lessons are based on real life situations and include language drills (grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary), communication, cultural aspects and idioms.  Other areas which I feel are important, such as pronunciation and prosody, will also be covered using my own material.

The lessons are organized preferably once a week, twice if you're very keen...  I come to you and all you need to plan for is a large enough table to work on, a note book and a pen.
